Boxers in Kingston have a rare opportunity to learn from one of Canada’s most accomplished amateur fighters this summer.
On Saturday, July 25th, West Side Boxing Club will host a special boxing seminar featuring Canadian Olympian and actor Mark Simmons. The two-hour event will run from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM and promises to deliver world-class boxing instruction from an athlete who competed at the highest levels of the sport.
Simmons enjoyed an outstanding amateur career, representing Canada internationally for nearly a decade and compiling more than 200 victories. His accomplishments include winning gold at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, earning a silver medal at the 1999 Pan American Games, capturing multiple Canadian National Championships, and representing Canada in the heavyweight division at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. At one point, he was ranked among the top heavyweight amateur boxers in the world.
Beyond his success in the ring, Simmons has also built an impressive career in film. Boxing fans may recognize him from appearances in the movies Cinderella Man, Phantom Punch, Rocky Marciano, and Flint Strong. In Cinderella Man, Simmons portrayed heavyweight contender Art Lasky and also served as a stunt double during filming.
One of the highlights of the seminar will be a special clinic dedicated to Simmons’ signature left hook. Participants will learn the mechanics, timing, positioning, and tactical application of one of the most effective punches in boxing from a fighter who spent years competing against the world’s elite. Whether you’re a competitive boxer, a recreational athlete, or a coach looking to expand your knowledge, this is a unique opportunity to gain insight from an Olympian who has performed on the biggest stages in amateur boxing.
Opportunities like this don’t come to Kingston very often. Training with athletes of Simmons’ caliber typically requires travelling to major boxing centers, making this seminar a valuable experience for local fighters and boxing enthusiasts alike.
